An exciting, information-packed evening with motivated and talented people showcasing their products and passion for self-driving technology.
I was invited to an Open House hosted by Uber ATG’s Engineering Team last night. Focus was on AV Maps. I was excited and had high expectations. My expectations were met in full. Thanks to knowledge-packed and very interesting ‘center-piece’ presentations by Lisa Weitekamp and Al Biglan as well as Poster Presentations by several mapping teams, it was time well spent. The teams were bursting with passion and energy and clearly loved what they were doing and were not afraid to show pride in their work.
As I drive to and from work, I often think about the challenges of self-driving cars as I observe situations – ‘guess I’m a bit of a geek. I knew that this critical domain of ‘mapping’ was complex, and the evening gave me great insight into how complex it really is, and the thousands of situations and problems that need to be identified, characterized and passed downstream to vehicle control within milliseconds.
I also had my first up-close meeting with Uber’s Volvo XC90 and the impressive technology stack on the outside as well as the inside.
The event and the venue itself was impressive from the moment I stepped inside the lobby. Contemporary elegance in large open spaces – Clearly an inspirational environment and milieu for creative souls.
